- Panic disorders, along with other mental disorders, are widespread throughout the United States. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 18% of the U.S. population. Panic disorders are included in this statistic, affecting approximately 2.7% of the U.S. population.

- Approximately 1 million Americans experience panic attack symptoms per month
- Average age of onset with Panic Disorder: 24 years of age
- Number of Americans who will suffer from Panic Disorder at some point during their lives: 3 million ( 1 in 75 )
- Female to male ratio: 72:28 (I found this especially interesting. Any thoughts as to why females rate higher, in Panic Disorder?

- 22%-70% of panic attacks are associated with chest pain
- Between 18%-25% of patients who go to emergency departments with chest pain have panic disorder
- Studies have found that individuals with Panic Disorder have elevated rates certain cardiovascular disorders (Ex: Idiopathic cardiomyopathy, hypertension, microvascular angina, and possibly death). More specifically, in a 35-year follow up study with 115 former psychiatric inpatients with Panic Disorder, researchers found elevated rates of cardiovascular mortality in both males and females. The incidence in men was double that of the expected rate (p <.01)
- 50% of individuals with Panic Disorder aren’t able to drive farther than three miles from their home
- 27% with Panic Disorder are on financially dependent on welfare
The standard treatment for Panic Disorder consists either behavioral or drug therapy. The most effective treatment is said to consist of a combination of both.
